15 Mar Reader's Mail: Morning Headache May Arise from Many Causes
Q. Recently I have been waking up with a headache. Today, it was the worst one I have had lately. This problem has been ongoing for a few weeks. What could be causing me to wake up with a headache? Could there be a solution?
A. Awakening with headache is common with many headache types and clearly cannot be diagnosed by mail. Migraine and cluster headaches are the most common, but others, including those associated with sleep apnea, can also awaken the individual.
Only after a careful history and neurological evaluation can treatment be recommended.
Try to see a headache specialist in your area if they persist.
