Managing Migraine When The Odds Are Against You

Receiving an accurate migraine diagnosis and treatment plan that decreases the frequency of your migraine attacks can be a challenge.

One barrier to effective migraine care is that a typical family doctor or general practitioner may have just four hours of headache education from their medical training, as reported by the World Health Organization in its Atlas of Headache Disorders report.

During a Migraine World Summit interview in 2016, Dr. Richard Lipton presented findings from a study that found just one out of 20 people with chronic migraine receives an accurate diagnosis and treatment guideline that were at least minimally effective. This means 19 out of 20 people aren’t receiving the right treatment or have been misdiagnosed.

When receiving appropriate care is such a challenge it’s easy to see why so many people are affected by frequent, debilitating migraine attacks.

Unfortunately, there’s no one universal treatment for migraine disease. That’s why we’re spreading the word about this year’s Migraine World Summit, which runs from March 17–25, 2021. The Migraine World Summit is the world’s largest free, online event for
people who want to learn about migraine treatment and how to reduce the frequency of their attacks.

There’s no cure for migraine disease, but that doesn’t mean you should accept ineffective care and treatment. Migraine can be managed. As a general rule of thumb, about a 50% reduction in migraine frequency from one preventative treatment is considered to be
effective. Overall, you should aim for up to an 80% reduction in your migraine frequency with a combination of multiple effective treatments and preventative strategies. And although it’s not typical, some people have even achieved migraine remission.

Learning about migraine treatments can help put you back in the driver’s seat of your migraine disease. The 2021 Migraine World Summit is the perfect opportunity to learn from the world’s best migraine doctors, researchers, and specialists including experts from the New England Center for Neurology and Headache, Harvard Medical School, and King’s College London.
