National Headache Foundation Elects Dr. Hope O’Brien as Board President; Organization Enters New Chapter of Leadership
CHICAGO, IL – November 21, 2025 – The National Headache Foundation (NHF) today announced the election of Hope O’Brien, MD, MBA, FAHS, FAAN as President of its Board of Directors, following a unanimous vote at the November 17 board meeting.
Dr. O’Brien, a nationally recognized headache specialist and NHF Board Member, succeeds Dr. Vincent Martin, who has served as Board President for nearly a decade.
This leadership transition comes during a period of renewal for the organization, as Katy Oakley recently began serving as Chief Executive Officer, helping guide the Foundation into its next phase of growth, advocacy, and national impact.
Dr. Hope O’Brien: A Leader in Headache Medicine
Dr. O’Brien is the founder and CEO of the Headache Center of Hope and an award-winning neurologist with extensive expertise in Neuroscience, Adult Neurology, and Headache Medicine. She previously served on the faculty at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, where she established the Young Adult Headache Program, one of the first programs in the nation designed specifically for patients ages 15–26.
Her research and clinical work focus on improving outcomes for people with migraine, addressing disparities, and empowering patients to return to the life they love.
“I’m honored to serve as Board President,” said Dr. Hope O’Brien. “The work of NHF is deeply meaningful, and I look forward to serving the community and advancing our mission alongside this dedicated organization.”
Deep Appreciation for Outgoing Board President
NHF expressed sincere gratitude to Dr. Vincent Martin for almost ten years of service as Board President. His leadership strengthened NHF’s programming and elevated the Foundation’s visibility within the headache and migraine field.
“We are profoundly grateful for Vince’s dedication and steady leadership,” said Katy Oakley. “His vision has positioned NHF for success and growth in the years ahead.”
A New Phase Under CEO Katy Oakley
Oakley, who stepped into the CEO role in September, joined NHF in 2024 and has since led key programmatic and partnership initiatives. With nearly twenty years of mission-driven leadership experience—and her own lived experience with chronic migraine and NDPH—she brings both strategic and personal insight to the Foundation’s work.
“It’s a privilege to lead NHF at this moment,” said Oakley. “I’m excited to partner with Dr. O’Brien and the Board to expand our impact and support for those living with headache disorders.”
About the National Headache Foundation
For more than 50 years, the National Headache Foundation has been dedicated to creating a future where everyone in the world with headache can thrive in optimal, functional and connected lives.
NHF understands that headaches and migraine disease are still largely misunderstood, underdiagnosed, and undertreated. Additionally, the personal and societal burdens of pain, disability, diminished quality of life and financial cost remains under-recognized. We are honored to have individuals with headache, their care partners, families, healthcare practitioners, and health policy decision makers on this journey, as there is so much we will do together to make a difference.
