January 2021, Episode 83: Dr. Lindsay Weitzel and Dr. Timothy Smith discuss the National Headache Foundation’s Certificate of Added Qualification in Headache Medicine (AQH). The program was started in 2000 in direct response to requests from people living with migraine disease and headache disorders. Patients expressed their difficulty in finding healthcare professionals who were trained in headache medicine.
To be eligible for the AQH competency examination, candidates must have three or more years involved in headache medicine, and be a licensed healthcare practitioner who can evaluate and manage headache patients independently, including physicians (M.D. and D.O.), physician assistants, advance practice nurses, dentists, and clinical psychologists. There are less than 1,000 certified headache clinicians to treat 40 million people with migraine disease and headache disorders. The AQH exam is offered two times per year.
